When we construct a financial plan for you, it is tailored to your personal requirements including your degree of comfort with different types of investments – ranging from investments that are more conservative to those that are more aggressive in nature.
How we choose which investments we recommend
Because Five Pillars is not aligned to any financial institution, we are not constrained by a parent organisation in our choice of investments. Over the years, we’ve identified several specialised investment strategies that have offered strong returns to our clients, and that have not been widely known about amongst the broader financial planning industry.
Our advisers also read extensively and attend a wide range of industry seminars. This enables them to research emerging investment opportunities, and to review the status and performance of investment products we are already recommending. A considerable amount of time is spent by our advisers on this task, so that we can draw our client’s attention to opportunities that may benefit them. The vast majority of investments we research do not meet our criteria. We feel however, that it is just as important to eliminate unsuitable investments, as it is to identify ones that offer real potential.
Drawing on this information, Five Pillars’ investment committee meets regularly to review emerging investments that are under consideration for inclusion in our recommendations. We also review existing investments to determine whether they should continue to be recommended.
Applying the investment strategy that suits you best
It is not always a matter of simply looking at your risk profile and allocating you to the model portfolio that matches. In some cases, the goals you are seeking to achieve and the time frame in which you have to get there means we need to discuss with you, the need to apply a different investment strategy to what your risk profile might suggest.
It comes down to giving you the information you need to make an informed choice about an effective path to take. Naturally we will follow your instructions, however if we believe that an alternate strategy will do a better job of delivering the objectives you have set, we will let you know and provide any necessary guidance.
